CHATWIN TRIUMPHS IN JUBILEE DOWNPOUR
The 4th Alpha Sports Sutton Park 10k took place in near monsoon conditions on the Queen’s Jubilee party weekend (Sunday June 3rd).
“The weather was really bad, just heavy rain from when we arrived at 7am to when we left at 1pm, it never stopped and it was cold too, so well done all who took part and thank you to our staff and marshals, they were all just brilliant”. Kevin Wilson
We had to change the route at the last minute to avoid the wettest areas – so times were noticeably slower than usual but the climax of the race saw three athletes sprint to the finish to thrill the small and very wet crowd. Sam Chatwin raced home in 35.21 just head of Brian Maynard in 35.22 with third home Simon Rendall in a close 35.24. First female athlete home was Linda Howell in a creditable 8th overall in 38.26, in a field of just under hundred as many put off by the atrocious conditions. Flickr photo album here.
We’re back in the popular Sutton Park venue for our third year and our second with our friends as sponsors Alpha Sports in Lichfield, a sports shop that understands the needs and requirements of runners. You can now register for this event.
Last year, when warm weather was forecast we rerouted the course to take in the more shaded and wooded areas of the Park which afforded runners less contact with direct sunlight and we’ll stay with this course this year as your feedback to was so positive.
Sutton Park is a popular venue especially in the summer months so be aware of other park users at all times and remember the Park has wildlife roaming free including cattle, and there will be lots of walkers, cyclists and dogs.
This event starts 1 year, 0 months, 16 days, 23 hours, 20 minutes, 45 seconds ago

This joint event with Cancer Research WEST MIDLANDS was a new event designed to appeal to men in a similar vein to the very successful RACE FOR LIFE womens’ events.
Participants dressed as a Superhero of their choice and had to take on some interesting challenges around the specially designed 9k route of Sutton Park, including wetting stations, cargo nets, steep inclines, woody trails and then run through foam at the finish line.
Well done to all the the runners, fund raisers and everyone else who helped to organise this successful fun run. Over 200 Batmen, Spidermen, Buzz Lightyears, Invincibles, Wonder Women and others braved the windy conditions to raise thousands of pounds for such a good cause.

The Alpha Sports Sutton Park 10k drew a field of 200 on a blisteringly hot summer’s day. We heeded the forecast and rerouted the course slightly on the Saturday before to ensure more of the course was in the shade and less hills were encountered.
The race was won by Peter Middleton in 35.55, followed by Brian Maynard in 36.66 and in third place Andrew Hunt 39.15. First female home was Phillippa Morris in 43.41 – which also secured her 20th place overall, in second was Emma Lines in 47.06 and Emma Tod 3rd female in 47.15. Here are the full results:
