The 5th annual Xtreme Challenge sponsored by Lichfield Health and Fitness Club saw a record turn-out of enthusiastic adventurous runners take on even more obstacles, fences, freezing water, super electric shocks, mad mud, nature fights back timber-laden woods and inclines to die for and still they come back for more!!! Awesome guys, just awesome.

2014 winner Connor Hancock blazed a fast trail and was never going to be caught as he came home in 34:54 in perfect winter condition of cold, dry and sunny and last year’s runner up and 2012 winner Robert Hall was second again in 39:20 with Paul Richards 3rd in 40:35.

First female home was Laura Appleby in 49:09 with Sophie Smith 2nd in 52:49 and Hannah Maidwell 3rd in 56:03.

News – The Worlds Shortest Fun Run Challenge Set

WSFR
The Virgin Active World’s Shortest Fun Run World Record Attempt held today (Monday May 6th) around the UK’s smallest park – Princes Park in Burntwood, attracted close to 400 people to take part and complete the 55 strides around the circumference in times as quickly as 7 seconds and as slow as 56 seconds, all in aid of The We Love Lichfield Fund.

The one-off event created a lot of interest from a wide audience of people as Kevin Wilson of organisers KP Events explains:

“This idea came out of a notion that where could we stage a fun run that everyone, irrespective age, ability or standard, could take part in; and the idea to run it around the UK’s smallest park was born. We have engaged with our new friends in Portland Oregon, home of the World’s smallest park, Mill Ends Park in Portland, which we call a flowerpot but they insist, as Guinness World Records recognise it – as a park, therefore it is a park. The transatlantic banter has been hugely entertaining.

We now have the job of convincing Guinness World Records that we have set a new record and 400 people, from age 3 months to 93, from pushchair bound to wheelchair bound, from doctor to teacher to secretary to waiter to long distance lorry driver to nanny to pet poodle – have had a bunch of fun setting it!

The weather was perfect, Christ Church next door to the Park threw open its doors to provide refreshments for the crowd and spectators clapped, chanted, whooped and sang to create a fantastic atmosphere, even encouraging 3 tortoises from a house opposite the park to have their own mini fun run!!

News from Guinness will come in a few weeks; they may or may not recognise the World’s shortest fun run at Princes Park, but much fun was had in the attempt and a good amount of money raised for a good cause.

BECKETT STORMS TO VICTORY

Michael Beckett was victorious in the WAITROSE LICHFIELD HALF MARATHON yesterday, a feat made all the more memorable as it was his first ever race over the distance!

Beckett (pictured) was in a small group of 4 who split off from the main field at around the 5 mile mark but then he broke clear in the last mile and came home to the cheers of the large crowd on Stowe Field. He was very complimentary of the event and how it was organized:

“I’d trained very hard to prepare but I couldn’t believe how well I ran. I’d like to thank all of the organisers, supporters and runners for creating a great atmosphere and coming out on a lovely Sunday morning to make it such a wonderful event.”

First female athlete home was Amanda Deavy (pictured) of Northbrook AC.

Richard Davis (pictured with winning athletes) Department Manager of sponsors Waitrose was delighted with how the event had gone:

“It was good to see the community of Lichfield out in such big numbers, it was a really well organised event with a fantastic atmosphere at the finish on Stowe Field. We hope we can be involved again in 2013 to make the event even bigger and better.”

Kevin Wilson of organisers KP Events was also pleased with the success of the event:

“We were very lucky with the weather which helped but the running community came together with the non-running community to make the day truly special and memorable for all who took part and watched the event. The police were wonderful in helping make it a safe event, and we raised money on the day for the WELOVELICHFIELD FUND which helps a number of good causes in the city – which is brilliant too.”
